Aging is inevitable, though its effects on your face can be minimized with a facelift. Located in Los Altos, Mittelman Plastic Surgery, led by board-certified facial plastic surgeon Harry Mittelman, MD, offers facelifts for men and women who live in and around San Jose, Palo Alto, San Francisco, and the surrounding communities of California.
What Is A Facelift?
A facelift can smooth wrinkles and give the neck a more defined look by tightening skin throughout the face.
Who Is The Ideal Candidate For A Facelift?
Ideal facelift candidates are healthy and are starting to see unwanted signs of aging in the face. Facelifts can make you appear more youthful, but they will not stop aging from progressing; it is critical that your expectations are realistic, or you will not be satisfied with the outcome of the procedure.
What Do I Need To Do Before A Facelift?
Your first step should be to schedule a consultation with Dr. Mittelman. He will review your goals for surgery and your medical history, as well as take before pictures so that your results can be compared following the procedure.
What Should I Expect On The Day Of My Facelift?
Before surgery, your vitals will be taken. You’ll change into a gown and markings will be made on the face to help guide the procedure.
How Long Does It Take To Perform A Facelift?
Most facelifts take approximately two to four hours to complete, though the time needed will vary between patients. The procedure is performed either under sedation or general anesthetic.
How is a Facelift Performed?
A facelift is performed to cut away excess skin and reshape facial muscles. The procedure redefines the face by correcting sagging skin on the face, neck and jowls.
Incisions are made along the hairline and forehead skin is lifted to access muscles and tissue below its surface. Muscles are tightened, skin is trimmed, and then the skin is tightened as it is repositioned. If necessary, an incision may be placed under the chin to access neck fat and skin for removal.
What to Expect After a Facelift?
Following your facelift, you’ll return home with orders to rest for several days. Discomfort, as well as swelling, should be expected, but discomfort should go away within a week or two. It may be multiple weeks before swelling completely goes away. Once your swelling and pain levels have gone down, you are free to go back to your normal activities.
Many facelift patients go back to work after two weeks. You should refrain from engaging in physical activities for a minimum of three weeks.
Will I Have Scars After Getting A Facelift?
The incisions required for a facelift will create scars, but since they are expertly placed behind the hairline by Dr. Mittelman, they are greatly hidden. As you heal, you’ll find that your scars aren’t as visible as they were immediately following the procedure.
When Will I See The Results?
Once swelling subsides, you’ll be able to visualize the results of your facelift. After three to six months, swelling should completely resolve, and you’ll be able to see your final results.
How Long Will The Results Of A Facelift Last?
The amount of time a facelift’s results will last vary from one patient to the next, as everyone experiences the effects of aging differently. In most patients, the results from a facelift last a lifetime.
