Rhinoplasty in Los Altos, CA
Located in Los Altos, Mittelman Plastic Surgery, led by board-certified facial plastic surgeon Harry Mittelman, MD, offers rhinoplasty for men and women who live in and around San Jose, Palo Alto and the surrounding communities of California. Through rhinoplasty, you can achieve better harmony and balance between your facial features, and may improve the function of your nose by correcting issues such as a deviated septum. Cosmetic enhancements are possible by addressing wide nostrils, a hooked appearance, bumps and other undesirable traits.
What Is Rhinoplasty?
Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, is quite common and addresses the size and shape of the nose. Size can be increased or decreased, and other traits that make a patient self-conscious can be removed, such as reducing the tip of the nose or its bridge, minimizing nostril size and altering the angle relation between the upper lip and the nose. The goal is to balance the nose with the patient’s facial features.
When Is The Best Time For Rhinoplasty?
Many patients choose to have rhinoplasty performed in the summer. Younger candidates often have more time off to allow for recovery during this season. Whether a nasal trauma has taken place due to sports or you’d simply like to correct the appearance of your nose, rhinoplasty can be performed most anytime.
A cosmetic rhinoplasty is performed to reshape the nose for aesthetic reasons. The tip may be reduced or enlarged, the nasal bridge may be reduced, the tip altered or the shape of the nostrils changed. The details of the procedure and techniques used will be determined during your evaluation. It is recommended that patients wait until the nose is fully developed before surgery; most females must be 17 years old, and males 18.
Rhinoplasty may be performed to correct deformities that have resulted from a nasal trauma. The same techniques are used for both cosmetic and corrective rhinoplasty, though they are employed in this case to correct fractures to the nose and septum.
Rhinoplasty may also be performed to improve breathing. This can be achieved by straightening out the septum or building new structures that better support the nose to facilitate breathing. Insurance may pay for corrective rhinoplasty procedures.
What to Expect During Rhinoplasty Surgery
To perform a rhinoplasty, incisions are made inside the nose, or inside the nose along with a minor incision below the nose’s tip. Bone and cartilage are exposed by lifting the skin and is then reshaped. The skin is repositioned, and sutures are made to close the incisions. The procedure is usually outpatient and requires two to three hours to complete. Tape and splints are worn for approximately one week after surgery.
Hard physical activities should be avoided for at least two weeks, and patients should avoid heavy lifting for at least three weeks. No contact sports or activities which could injure the nose should take place for at least six weeks. It will take an entire year for full healing to occur, although benefits can be seen in just a few weeks.
If you are considering rhinoplasty, schedule a consultation. Using video imaging, we can help you visualize the final results the procedure could offer. Our goal is to help you achieve the look you want and improve your breathing, if necessary.
